The Never Ending Summer

Rock Climbing NordicSome of you may have heard me tell you how much I love summer, and believe me I seriously do love the summers! It’s been about 4 years now since I have seen a full winter, wherever I am when summer is on its last legs and the winter starts kicking in I’m on the next plane to another country where summer is just peeping its head around the corner. If I’m not in Europe for the Australian winter riding and racing you would probably find me in Canada doing the same thing. I don’t think I could go as far as saying I hate winter as such but rather the fact that winter limits what can be done in a day. The lack of sun, countless amounts of rain and never ending overcast days just don’t quite do it for me, not to mention the short days.

Whistler, Crankworx and Injuries

Joffre Lake, Canada BC It was after sitting down at the local coffee shop, watching the never ending stream of happy tourists that it occurred to me how damn lucky I am! After giving a local dog a quick pat temporarily distracted him from his never ending mission in search of food and a bit of loving I was thinking who can say they move to the most spectacular place on earth British Columbia in Canada for 5 months of the year to work, ride, hang out with friends and just love life. On top of that, be able to race in the biggest mountain bike festival in the world simply by stepping out my front door onto the mountains surrounding Whistler. Lakes, sun, pools, hot tubs, beers, friends, riding, racing and that’s just touching the surface of what makes up my days… Seriously what more could one want!

Red Bull 5000 Down

A mass start downhill race from the peak of Whistler Mountain descending more than 2,320m (12.3km) and a vertical drop of 1,503m (5,020 feet) at an average speed of 76km/h to cross the finish line in the Whistler Village.

Whistler Downhill

It’s been about 4 weeks now since the downhill lifts have opened here at Whistler and I have been loving every bit of it. It took a while to get used to the size of everything over here…the jumps are bigger, the drops are bigger, the berms are bigger; it’s as though everything here is just bigger than anything I have seen let alone ridden before.

Whistler for the Summer

So the adventure has started! I am now sitting in a peaceful apartment in Whistler village listening to the rain fall gently against the window looking out onto Blackcomb Mountain. Most nights we get a bit of rain here but the rest of the time the weather is pretty good, a little on the cold side though. I arrived late Wednesday night after a draining 24 hours of traveling and have spent the last few days unpacking and settling in.
