Crossing the finish line in the U19 Australian National Mountain bike Championships Cross Country Short Course race

The cross country short course started just after mid day on the newly developed 400m short course track at the base of Mt Stromlo. It was very different to other short course tracks I had raced on, it had berms, a sharp pinch and a decent sized jump which took its toll with some riders unsuccessfully clearing it. A short course race involves racing around a track for 15 minutes, then racing another 3 laps. The first person over the start/finish line after the final 3 laps was the winner.

From the outcome of the cross country race the day before I had decided I would try to break away from the front of the pack at the start, this did not work as expected. I lead for the first lap nearly crashing out on the third corner, but luckily I was able to get my foot down to balance myself in time. Another 2 laps passed and I worked out that I would not be able to hold this lead for the duration of the race. Northern Territory rider David Johnston took over from me and kindly stepped up the pace. The pace change started to split the trailing pack, those that were just trying to hang onto the back started to fall behind. After another lap the leader himself lost traction on the front tyre going through the same corner in which I slipped out first lap, Johnston hit the deck in front of me and I was able to just squeeze around him without coming down myself. From there Brawnsteins and I opened a gap between current third place where I lead another few laps until Brawnsteins decided to take the lead, he lead until the second last lap from where I passed him and opened another gap between us.

With the leading gap I was able to cross the finish line 1st followed by Brawnsteins about 50m behind in 2nd then Johnston 3rd who made a remarkable effort in tryng to breach the gap that separated him from myself and Brawnsteins.
